“Canada’s Men’s Volleyball Team Eyes 2028 Olympic Berth”

Canada’s men’s indoor volleyball team is on the brink of securing a spot at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The team, currently ranked 13th globally, can book their ticket with a win in the gold-medal match against either Cuba or the Dominican Republic at 6 p.m. ET in Moncton, N.B., this Saturday.

Following their 3-0 sweep of Mexico on Friday, where they won by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-13, Canada’s 14-man squad showcased dominance in attack points (42-31), blocks (8-0), and aces (8-2) at the Avenir Centre. This victory comes after their defeat to the United States in the gold-medal match of the NORCECA Continental Championship earlier in the week.

The Canadian men’s volleyball team has participated in six Summer Games, with their best finish being fourth place in 1984, also held in Los Angeles. They previously defeated Mexico in the 2024 Olympic qualifiers and finished 10th in the Paris Olympics. In contrast, Mexico, after a 48-year Olympic absence, placed 11th in Rio in 2016.

Earlier in the week, Canada secured a spot at the World Cup in Poland next September by defeating Cuba in the semifinals in Moncton. This strong performance puts Canada in a favorable position as they aim to qualify for the upcoming Olympics.
