Just ahead of Canada’s imposition of counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods, both sides show no intention of engaging in last-minute negotiations. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that there are no planned discussions between Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, and Canadian trade negotiators have no scheduled return to the negotiating table before the 12:01 a.m. Tuesday deadline, when the counter-tariffs will affect 700 American products.
These counter-tariffs, ranging from 15 to 50 per cent, are a direct response to Trump’s recent 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods following the breakdown of trade talks last month. The sectors facing the highest tariffs are those most impacted by U.S. tariffs, including steel, dairy, and wood products.
In a recent interview with CBC News, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer cautioned about potential U.S. retaliation, hinting at the possibility of bans on Canadian products in response to further Canadian retaliation. Trump has been vocal in his criticism, particularly targeting Canada’s exchange rate with the U.S., which he labeled as “unacceptable.”
Despite the escalating tensions, Carney has expressed willingness to return to negotiations, emphasizing that Canada is ready to engage in serious discussions if the U.S. refrains from negative rhetoric and demonstrates a commitment to finalizing a trade deal.
