“Canada Pauses U.S. Helicopter Deal Amid Trade Tensions”

The Canadian government quietly halted the purchase of 16 U.S.-made UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters before trade negotiations with the Trump administration. The helicopters, intended for Canada’s special forces, are produced by Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin. The decision to pause the acquisition was influenced by trade and diplomatic tensions with the U.S. government.

The procurement, which had received initial approval from the U.S. State Department, was put on hold just before trade talks in Washington. This move was part of a broader assessment of Canadian military procurement plans to reduce reliance on U.S. defense equipment. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government aims to prioritize domestic defense production partnerships and only resort to foreign purchases as a last option.

The review also extends to the potential acquisition of F-35 stealth fighters from Lockheed Martin, with Canada still evaluating whether to proceed with the planned purchase of 88 aircraft. Despite commitments for 16 F-35s, the final decision remains pending.

The Black Hawk helicopters are intended to replace the aging CH-146 Griffon currently used by special forces. The decision to pause the purchase reflects concerns about public sentiment and the need for a competitive procurement process. The government is exploring alternative options for meeting the special forces’ requirements.

Amidst political uncertainties, defense analysts and officials acknowledge the challenges of ongoing military procurement projects with U.S. suppliers. Lockheed Martin has expressed readiness to support Canada’s military needs despite the current pause in acquisitions.

Delays in announcing military contracts with American firms, such as specialized cloud computing services with Google and a ground vehicle crew training system with Raytheon, indicate Ottawa’s cautious approach towards U.S. defense purchases. The government’s handling of military acquisitions reflects a broader strategic shift towards self-reliance and careful evaluation of international procurement decisions.
