“British Senior Separated During Spain Wildfires Tragedy”

A senior citizen from the UK, concerned about the well-being of his wife, friends, and neighbors, recounted his last encounter with them before they went missing during the devastating wildfires in Spain. Malcolm Timbrell, 70, got separated from his wife, Annette Kilgore, 69, and their group as flames engulfed their village of Bedar in the Almeria province. Timbrell and Kilgore had moved to Bedar after being featured on Channel 4’s show “A Place in the Sun,” which led them to the property. Initially planning to flee by car, Timbrell went back to rescue their two cats, only to find the group fleeing on foot without their vehicles, despite his warnings about the danger posed by the rapidly advancing fire.

Timbrell shared with the BBC that his wife and seven other individuals chose to walk ahead of the wildfire, which was moving at a speed of over 20 kilometers per hour, leading to a tragic outcome. Timbrell and one of the cats managed to evade the flames by moving between deserted vehicles before they were engulfed by the fire.

In a tragic turn of events, a 93-year-old British woman is confirmed as one of the casualties of the catastrophic wildfires that swept through southern Spain. The Andalusian government disclosed that she was hospitalized with severe burns covering about 20% of her body, with her passing confirmed on Sunday. Among the deceased, at least four are believed to be British, as four bodies were found in a burnt-out car with its steering wheel on the right side.

Reports surfaced on Sunday that two British hikers were found alive but with severe burns. The pair, sustaining burns on 40% of their bodies, were discovered by a Civil Guard team, who persisted in their search efforts despite the challenging conditions. The couple is currently in serious condition at the hospital, although their lives are not deemed to be in immediate danger.

Spanish authorities indicated that all the victims were likely foreign tourists who attempted to escape on foot after abandoning their vehicles and navigating difficult terrain. Post-mortem examinations and DNA samples are being utilized to identify the victims, confirmed Antonio Sanz, head of Andalusia’s emergency services.

Spain has been grappling with increasingly frequent and severe heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures surpassing 40C regularly. The country endured a period of record-breaking temperatures in June, resulting in over 1,000 excess deaths tied to the extreme heat.

A spokesperson from the Foreign Office expressed solidarity with those affected by the devastating wildfires in Spain, emphasizing that they are assisting impacted British nationals and their families while maintaining close communication with Spanish authorities.
