In a daring late-night operation to track down suspected enemy drones linked to the Kremlin, a British police helicopter pilot found himself in a harrowing situation where he believed his life was at risk.
The pilot reportedly had to perform a sudden dive at a military base in the Suffolk countryside to avoid the drones allegedly controlled by Russia, which were initially launched from a shadow fleet tanker in Hull.
Assigned to investigate drone sightings above RAF Lakenheath in November 2024, the pilot was tasked with monitoring the base, known for housing American nuclear weapons.
Following multiple incursions over RAF bases like Lakenheath, Fairford, Mildenhall, and Feltwell, several high-level Cobra meetings were convened to address the security breaches.
According to insider reports, the helicopter’s commanding officer, part of the National Police Air Service, observed red flashing lights on the drones, suspecting they were conducting surveillance over Lakenheath airfield during efforts to neutralize them.
Intelligence experts recently accused Vladimir Putin of orchestrating the drone activities targeting Royal Air Force bases and the UK’s nuclear arsenal, as detailed in a report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
The report highlighted a 15-month surveillance campaign involving drones flying over sensitive US military installations in the UK, with connections made to the presence of the Russian-crewed cargo ship HAV Dolphin near Hull during some of the incidents.
The report emphasized Russia’s ability to breach NATO airspace undetected, particularly over nuclear sites, posing a significant challenge to allied air defense systems.
Attributing Russia’s success to exploiting gaps in European air defense structures designed for conventional threats, the report underscored the need for enhanced counterdrone capabilities to safeguard military installations.
Government sources acknowledged the sophistication and speed of the drones, expressing caution in definitively attributing the attacks while emphasizing ongoing efforts to enhance security measures to counter drone threats.
The Ministry of Defence reiterated its commitment to bolstering defenses against drone threats through legislative measures like the Armed Forces Bill and substantial investments in anti-drone technologies to protect military personnel and critical assets.
