British Columbia’s forests minister has announced the conclusion of the provincewide state of emergency triggered by wildfires, emphasizing that the wildfire risk remains high. The state of emergency was instated on August 8 following the evacuation of numerous residents in the Summerland area due to the Bald Range wildfire. Despite the extension of the state of emergency on August 21, Forests Minister Ravi Parmar stated in Summerland that the emergency measures are no longer required at this time. He highlighted the ongoing wildfire season and the need for continued vigilance due to the intensity and duration of fire seasons. Parmar urged tourists to return to the Okanagan region to support local businesses recovering from the impacts of the wildfires.
Additionally, the B.C. Wildfire Service revealed plans to lift the offroad vehicle ban in various regions of the province, effective Friday at noon PT. The decision to rescind the ban comes as a result of improving conditions and the forecast of cooler, wetter weather. The Wildfire Service emphasized that they will closely monitor the wildfire risk and may reimpose restrictions based on changing conditions. Earlier in August, the prohibition on recreational offroad vehicle use on Crown land was implemented in several fire centres, including the Kamloops Fire Centre, Southeast Fire Centre, and parts of the Cariboo and Coastal fire centres.
