“Boy Loses Leg in Brazil Shark Attack”

An 11-year-old boy had to undergo emergency surgery resulting in the amputation of his left leg after a shark attack off the coast of Jaboatao dos Guararapes near Recife, Brazil. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon. The boy’s uncle, Aldemir Jose, recounted being at the beach with his nephew and daughter when the attack happened. Hearing a commotion, he saw blood in the water and quickly rescued his nephew, who was conscious and pleading not to die.

Emergency responders arrived promptly, and a nurse provided initial care before the boy was transported to a nearby hospital. Reports indicated that the shark had bitten the child’s left hand and hip during the attack. The uncle later confirmed that the boy’s left leg had to be amputated.

The incident took place at Praia da Piedade, also known as Piedade Beach, which is labeled as a “Danger – Shark Zone.” Danise Alves, from the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT), highlighted specific areas where swimming should be avoided due to the risk of shark attacks.

This shark attack marks the third incident this year in Pernambuco, with previous attacks occurring in January. Over the past 34 years, there have been a total of 83 recorded shark attacks in the state, resulting in 27 fatalities.
