The Toronto Blue Jays inaugurated their new Hall of Excellence on Saturday, commemorating the 2026 inductee Buck Martinez at Rogers Centre during an afternoon ceremony. This initiative is part of the team’s 50th anniversary celebrations, showcasing the outstanding contributors to the franchise. The Hall, situated behind right field on the stadium concourse, replaced the former Level of Excellence and enshrined 11 honourees.
Buck Martinez, a former Blue Jays manager, player, and long-time team broadcaster who retired last winter, was honored at the ceremony before the Blue Jays’ game against the Seattle Mariners. Martinez, aged 77, now joins esteemed figures like José Bautista, Paul Beeston, George Bell, Joe Carter, Tom Cheek, Carlos Delgado, Tony Fernandez, Cito Gaston, Pat Gillick, Roy Halladay, and Dave Stieb in the Hall of Excellence.
Dave Stieb, one of the inductees, praised Martinez, highlighting his supportive role as a teammate during his playing days. Stieb recalled Martinez’s ability to calm him down and keep him focused during intense moments on the field.
The Hall of Excellence aims to honor various individuals who have contributed to the Blue Jays’ legacy, including players, coaches, managers, builders, and broadcasters from past, present, and future eras. Martinez, who retired as a player in 1986 after a successful 17-year MLB career with multiple teams, was commended for his skills as a catcher and mentor to younger pitchers.
Martinez’s broadcasting journey began while he was still an active player in 1982, covering playoff and all-star games. Transitioning to television in 1987 as a color analyst, he went on to call over 4,000 Blue Jays games. Martinez also managed the team briefly in the early 2000s and provided commentary for various prominent networks and platforms.
In recognition of his significant contributions to Canadian baseball, Martinez received the Jack Graney Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023. His extensive career spans across various broadcasting platforms, showcasing his passion and dedication to the sport.
The establishment of the Hall of Excellence signifies a new chapter in honoring the Blue Jays’ history and connecting fans with the influential figures who have shaped the team over the years.
