‘Black Widow’ fraudster arrested in Tenerife faces UK extradition

A woman who deceived a vulnerable pensioner into giving her nearly £300,000 is set to be brought back to the UK following her arrest in Tenerife.

Pamela Gwinnett, known as the ‘Black Widow,’ posed as the caregiver of 89-year-old Joan Green, who she alienated from her family during the pandemic. Gwinnett, 63, exploited Mrs. Green’s trust by persuading her to transfer Power of Attorney, allowing her to control the finances.

She squandered the funds on luxury items like Botox treatments, an expensive car, lavish meals, and property expenses, all while confining Mrs. Green at her residence in Lancashire. Gwinnett also made false accusations against Mrs. Green’s family and cut off her contact with them.

After Mrs. Green’s death in 2022, Gwinnett fled to Tenerife while facing charges of theft and fraud. Despite being convicted in her absence and receiving a six-year sentence, she was found and arrested in Tenerife by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) with the assistance of the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spanish authorities.

GMP emphasized their commitment to bringing Gwinnett back to the UK to face justice for defrauding Mrs. Green and causing immense harm to her and her family. They expressed hope that Gwinnett’s extradition will provide closure to the victim’s loved ones and deter others from exploiting vulnerable individuals.
