A group of eight bikers from Devon were surprised with fines amounting to nearly £1,000 after stopping for ice creams at a popular beauty spot in North Wales. The bikers, who were visiting Llyn Tegid in Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia, were captured by newly installed cameras aimed at preventing overnight camping.
Each of the motorcyclists is facing two separate £60 fines for stopping twice to purchase ice creams, resulting in a total fine of £960 for the group. One of the bikers expressed his disappointment on a local forum, mentioning that they were unaware of the new parking fees and would have willingly paid the nominal charge if properly informed.
Following the incident, a petition has been launched urging the Eryri National Park Authority (ENPA) to allow free access to the lake’s car parks. Other motorists have also reported receiving fines after visiting before the ANPR cameras were activated on July 12.
The introduction of solar-powered ANPR cameras and increased parking fees at Llyn Tegid’s car parks has been met with mixed reactions. While some locals have expressed concerns over over-tourism and parking restrictions, others have criticized the enforcement model managed by a private company. Residents have initiated a campaign demanding greater access to the lake and fairer parking arrangements.
Despite the backlash, ENPA has stated that the current pilot scheme, which includes the use of ANPR technology to address overnight camping and parking fee compliance, will continue until the end of the October half-term. The findings from the pilot will be evaluated to determine any necessary changes to the parking management system.
The aim of the pilot scheme is to enhance the visitor experience, ensure proper parking fee collection, and facilitate the maintenance of the sites. Additionally, both car parks are now closed from midnight to 2 am daily to deter overnight parking.
