Esther Ghey, a mother who has been advocating for child safety online following the tragic murder of her daughter Brianna, is now promoting a Phone’s Down Challenge for youngsters during the upcoming summer break. The initiative encourages kids to disconnect from their phones for a week to engage in outdoor activities and socialize with friends. Esther believes that reducing phone usage can help children experience a more enriching holiday away from the digital world.
Brianna, aged 16, lost her life in a stabbing incident orchestrated by two teenagers, Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe, who planned the attack through the Snapchat social media app. Inspired by Esther’s challenge, thirteen-year-old Olivia Bell has already taken steps to participate by refraining from using popular apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Roblox for a seven-day period. Olivia shared her motivation, acknowledging her excessive daily phone usage and the positive impact of spending time without screens, such as engaging in conversations, playing sports, and pursuing creative activities with friends.
Debbie, Olivia’s mother, expressed joy in witnessing her daughter and her friend engaging in outdoor activities like football, emphasizing the value of traditional summer pastimes. Olivia and her friend Charlotte, both 13, are committed to completing the challenge together.
Recent research by The Children’s Commissioner revealed alarming statistics, showing that one in five young individuals spends more than seven hours per day on digital screens, leading to significant disruptions in their sleep patterns. In response to these concerns, the government announced plans to implement a groundbreaking policy by 2027, prohibiting children under 16 from accessing major social media platforms. The proposed regulations may include age restrictions on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and YouTube. Additionally, measures like curfews on app usage for 16- and 17-year-olds and age restrictions for AI chatbots are being considered to safeguard young users online.
