“Bank CEOs Sound Alarm Over AI Trustworthiness”

Bank of Montreal’s CEO, Darryl White, has expressed concerns about the trustworthiness of artificial intelligence agents when it comes to handling personal banking information. White highlighted his worries at the Toronto Global Forum, emphasizing the rapid advancement of AI technology without corresponding regulations and safeguards. This comes in the wake of comments made by RBC’s CEO regarding the potential blocking of Meta’s Muse AI agent from accessing client data at his bank.

White, who leads Canada’s fourth-largest bank in terms of total assets, pointed out that individuals have become accustomed to entering personal information into various agents within the e-commerce system over the past 25 years. He cautioned against sharing sensitive data like banking usernames, passwords, credit card details, social insurance numbers, and PINs, highlighting the lack of protection for such information. White stressed the importance of educating people on the risks involved.

Canadian banks have heavily invested in artificial intelligence in recent years, with BMO leveraging AI in its insurance division to expedite underwriting decisions from 28 days to just 10 seconds, as proudly stated by White in August.

AI agents such as Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s ChatGPT can be authorized by clients to access bank accounts and credit cards for monitoring balances, transaction histories, and spending habit recommendations, but human approval is usually required for making purchases. RBC’s CEO, Dave McKay, revealed that the bank is contemplating blocking Muse from accessing client information to maintain a balance between consumer needs and system privacy and safety.

Other major banks, such as JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Charles Schwab, have also taken steps to block or restrict external AI agents from utilizing their clients’ data, as per recent statements from their respective CEOs.
