Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has made a generous donation of $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library after learning that five branches were facing permanent closure. In an interview with CBC News, Reid expressed her belief in using her success for the greater good within her community.
The library had recently decided to utilize $80,000 from its reserve funds to extend the operation of the five branches until the end of September. Despite receiving partial funding from municipalities, there was still a shortfall of over $200,000 needed to sustain these libraries.
Acknowledging Reid’s contribution as one of the largest private donations in the library’s history, CEO Julia Merritt expressed deep gratitude for her investment in supporting libraries and the local community. The library emphasized that Reid’s donation would have a significant impact in enabling continued access to reading, learning, and community engagement throughout the region.
Reid, known for her popular “Heated Rivalry” series, credited her local library in Bedford, N.S., for nurturing her passion for writing and literature since childhood. She emphasized the vital role libraries play as essential community services that require proper funding for their sustainability.
While Reid’s donation is a substantial aid, the library emphasized the ongoing need for increased stable public funding and strong partnerships at the municipal and provincial levels. Reid hopes that her contribution will raise awareness about the funding challenges faced by public libraries and encourage further support.
The library plans to collaborate with Reid on a special public event to celebrate libraries, reading, and community engagement, with more details to be announced soon. Reid reiterated her commitment to supporting her community and expressed her desire to address government policy gaps affecting public services in Nova Scotia.
