A woman in Australia was captured on video strangling her puppy in a case of prolonged cruelty because the pet was damaging her belongings.
Lani Beattie, 23, received a suspended jail term for mistreating her young furry companion.
A bystander recorded Beattie standing over the motionless Roxy in her Beckenham backyard in Perth on October 13 last year.
The one-year-old canine, a staffy-kelpie mix, was tethered to a pole with a rope around her neck, whimpering audibly.
According to The West, the witness described how the puppy screamed, gasped, and fought for breath.
The RSPCA WA was alerted to the distressing scene by the witness.
Roxy exhibited bruising, swelling, bleeding in her right eye, and signs of psychological trauma during a veterinary examination.
Beattie expressed her desire to get rid of Roxy because the puppy was destroying her belongings.
Roxy has since been rehomed by the RSPCA.
Beattie appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on July 2, where the RSPCA WA prosecutor condemned her actions as “wicked” and “prolonged” cruelty.
Magistrate Michelle Harries criticized Beattie’s behavior as “abhorrent.”
Harries remarked, “The facts, in my opinion, are severe. They are facts that should bring you great shame.”
Beattie was found guilty of animal cruelty and sentenced to six months and 14 days in custody, with the sentence suspended for 12 months under supervision and program obligations.
The 23-year-old is prohibited from owning or caring for animals for five years and must pay over $1,600 to RSPCA WA.
Kylie Green, RSPCA WA inspector manager, expressed shock at the mistreatment.
Green stated, “It’s heartbreaking to think of the fear and suffering Roxy endured over an extended period that morning.”
“One-year-old dogs, especially those lacking adequate training, attention, and affection, may naturally chew on items left within reach,” Green added.
“To use this as an excuse for inflicting harm on an animal—exactly what this perpetrator did—is illogical and incomprehensible.”
