Argentine Players Receive FIFA Bans After World Cup Final Altercations

FIFA has recently issued bans to three Argentine players following their actions post the World Cup final loss to Spain. Among them, midfielder Leandro Paredes received a significant 10-match suspension for physical altercations with Spanish players Eric Garcia and Gavi. This penalty is considered one of the most severe in World Cup history, comparable to the ban handed to Uruguay’s Luis Suarez in 2014.

In addition to Paredes, defender Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven games, while Thiago Almada received a one-game ban. The fines imposed by FIFA amounted to $90,000 for Paredes and Molina, and $30,000 for Almada. Paredes’ ban effectively sidelines him from the Argentina national team for a year, given the scheduled national team matches until June 2027, which may primarily consist of friendly games.

Furthermore, Spain’s Gavi also faced a one-game ban for an upcoming Nations League match against England. Additionally, Argentina’s coach, Roberto Ayala, received a three-game ban and a $30,000 fine. The Argentine Football Association was fined $110,000 for various incidents during the World Cup, including displaying a political banner after defeating England in the semifinals and fan behavior.

The AFA has the option to appeal the sanctions and fines to FIFA and potentially to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In the past, similar high-profile cases include Luis Suarez’s ban in 2014 for biting an opponent and Josip Simunic’s ban in 2013 for inappropriate conduct during a World Cup qualifying playoff match.

The altercations during the World Cup final led to charges of assault by FIFA, with Argentina losing to Spain in a closely contested match. The disciplinary measures also include a requirement for Argentina to host their next home game at a stadium operating at 50% capacity, with further sanctions deferred pending a probationary period. Argentina had received $34 million in prize money from FIFA for their World Cup participation.
