Marie-Yasmine Alidou secured the decisive goal from a penalty kick in the 55th minute, propelling the Montreal Roses to a 2-0 victory over AFC Toronto in Northern Super League competition on Sunday. Elyse Bennett, scoring her ninth goal of the season, provided additional assurance for the Roses, who sit in second place with a record of 9-4-3. This marked their inaugural match under the guidance of interim head coach Maryse Bard-Martel.
Despite a strong effort from Shelina Zadorsky, who seemed to equalize for Toronto in the 68th minute, her goal was disallowed due to an offside ruling. Goalkeeper Anna Karpenko of the Roses faced 20 shots, with nine on target, and managed to secure a clean sheet.
On the opposing end, Toronto keeper Sabrina D’Angelo confronted seven shots, five of which were on target. The Roses took the field for the first time following the dismissal of head coach Robert Rositoiu, following a shocking 1-0 defeat to semi-pro team Simcoe County in the W Canadian Championship.
