“Alberta Separatist Leader Vows Persistence Despite Referendum Outcome”

Alberta separatism movement leader, Mitch Sylvestre, expressed determination that the group’s efforts would not cease even if the upcoming referendum does not align with their wishes. Sylvestre, CEO of the Alberta Prosperity Project, emphasized their commitment to the cause, citing concerns about the current situation. The referendum scheduled for October 19 will allow Albertans to decide whether to remain part of Canada or pursue a binding referendum on separation.

While recent polls indicate strong support for staying in Canada, Sylvestre remains focused on advocating for independence. He mentioned that regardless of the referendum outcome, the movement will persist. Sylvestre anticipates significant support for a binding separation referendum and highlighted his firsthand experience of backing for independence during town hall meetings.

Regarding the potential impact of the referendum results on their cause, Sylvestre emphasized that a substantial defeat would be necessary to alter his stance. He indicated that even if the vote outcome is unfavorable, the movement would endure. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s press secretary, Sam Blackett, emphasized the government’s commitment to respecting the referendum results and urged all Albertans to do the same.

Elections Alberta reported a significant increase in mail-in ballots for the upcoming referendum, with over 650,000 ballots distributed. Sylvestre expressed skepticism about mail-in ballots favoring remaining in Canada, raising concerns about potential bias. However, he stated willingness to trust mail-in ballots supporting the option for a future vote. Elections Alberta clarified the process for accepting mail-in ballots and addressed the rarity of fraudulent voting instances in past elections.
