“Alberta Separatist Group Demands More Funding Transparency”

A group advocating for Alberta’s separation expressed satisfaction after being prompted by Elections Alberta to disclose certain campaign finances. Cory Morgan, the leader of Pathway to Independence, had raised concerns about Forever Canadian’s failure to reveal its fundraising totals earlier. Morgan criticized Thomas Lukaszuk for running a campaign without transparency on funding sources and expenditure limits, unlike other organizations involved in the referendum. Elections Alberta recently reached a compliance agreement with Forever Canadian, requiring the group to report expenses related to events where referendum positions were discussed, including those featuring the Unity Bus after August 20.

Former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk’s organization, Forever Canadian, registered as a third-party advertiser in June but had not disclosed financial contributions until recently. Lukaszuk defended the delay, stating it aligned with Elections Alberta’s regulations since the group did not endorse a specific referendum choice initially. However, following public pressure, Forever Canadian announced its intention to campaign openly and reveal its election finances. As of October 1, the group had disclosed over $94,000 in donations to Elections Alberta, below the $607,000 maximum contribution limit for third-party advertisers.

Despite the compliance agreement, Cory Morgan believes more transparency is needed, especially with the voting day approaching in two weeks. He emphasized the importance of clarifying financial details before voters make decisions. Rebel News Network Ltd. filed a complaint in July regarding Forever Canadian’s financial reporting, leading to a subsequent judicial review application, which was ultimately denied.

The upcoming October 19 referendum in Alberta will determine residents’ stance on remaining in Canada or proceeding with a second referendum on secession. Stephen Carter, from the pro-Confederation group Alberta’s Voice, supported the compliance agreement, emphasizing the need for a fair and transparent referendum process overseen by Elections Alberta. Carter welcomed Forever Canadian’s inclusion in the third-party advertiser rules, enhancing accountability within the campaign landscape.
