Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is scheduled to address the media on Wednesday morning in Calgary, following her televised speech on Tuesday evening discussing the outcome of the Alberta referendum. In her Tuesday speech, Smith emphasized that her United Conservative Party government would move forward with reforms based on the mandate received from Albertans on the night of the referendum. She also assured that there would be no further referendum on Alberta’s independence during her tenure as premier.
As of Wednesday morning, the results of the 10-question referendum are still being finalized. While CBC’s projection on Monday indicated strong support for Alberta remaining in Canada, the outcomes of the other questions remain too close to determine conclusively. Smith had previously stated her intention to adhere to a “majority rule” principle, requiring a 50% plus one threshold to address the first nine questions related to immigration and constitutional matters.
The news conference scheduled for Wednesday offers reporters the first opportunity to question the premier regarding the referendum results from Monday and the government’s forthcoming actions post the significant vote. The news conference will be broadcast live at 11:30 a.m. MT.
