“Yaga” Premieres on Crave: A Spooky Sensation

The upcoming premiere of “Yaga” on Crave this weekend is eagerly anticipated by two distinct groups: fans of Hudson Williams, looking forward to his next significant project post “Heated Rivalry,” and those who enthusiastically embrace the spooky season. It’s perfectly acceptable to fall into both categories.

This eight-episode half-hour drama has garnered significant attention not only for the presence of Hudson Williams but also for its star-studded Canadian cast, including Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid, Clark Backo, and Megan Follows. Set in the fictional town of Whittock, the series offers a tantalizing mix of mystery and sensuality, with Williams portraying dual roles in a town where a wealthy family holds power, yet witches wield their influence without fear.

Described by cast member Sheila McCarthy as “sort of Dexter with witches,” the series debuts its first two episodes this Friday, followed by weekly releases leading up to the two-episode season finale on November 27.

Before transitioning into a streaming series, “Yaga” originated as a play that premiered at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre in September 2019. Nominated for a Dora Award, the play combined folklore and mystery, with three actors portraying multiple characters on a minimalist stage. Kat Sandler, the writer and director of the play, now serves as the writer and showrunner for the streaming adaptation.

The character played by Hudson Williams in the play has been split into two roles for the series, a decision made long before Williams gained international fame. The folklore-inspired character of Baba Yaga, a figure from Slavic tales, embodies dual aspects of a malevolent witch and a wise mentor, symbolizing themes of darkness and transformation.

“Yaga” showcases a strong female presence both in front of and behind the camera, reflecting a narrative that celebrates powerful women. The show’s cast and crew, led by Sandler, have displayed a remarkable level of collaboration and dedication to realizing the series’ vision.

With the series nearing its premiere, Sandler expresses a mix of emotions, describing herself as feeling empowered, feminine, and ready for the show’s debut.
