“Sexual Assault Survivor Expresses Frustration at Assailant’s Early Release”

A woman who went undercover to elicit a confession from the man who sexually assaulted her expresses frustration and retraumatization over a parole board’s decision to release him. Vienna Luke, who has garnered support nationwide and globally following her remarkable story detailed in the CBC podcast “Personally: Agent Layla,” voiced disappointment regarding the early release of Justin Sewell. Luke stated, “I feel deflated. My story is out there, but there is still much more work to be done.”

The parole board’s decision to release Sewell on October 6 was based on his perceived low risk of reoffending and his active participation in therapeutic programs while residing in a halfway house. Sewell was convicted of drugging, assaulting, and photographing Luke in 2007 when she was 20 years old, as detailed in the “Personally: Agent Layla” podcast and court records.

After deliberating for years on the events of the assault, Luke reported the incident to the police in 2019 following a recorded conversation where Sewell’s ex-lover disclosed drugging her. Subsequently, Luke, under the alias Agent Layla, worked with the RCMP to gather incriminating evidence against Sewell, leading to his admission of guilt for sexual assault and voyeurism.

Sewell’s sentencing process was marked by a dispute over the root cause of his actions, with a provincial court initially sentencing him to house arrest but later overturning the decision and imposing a prison sentence. Sewell was granted day parole in April 2026 and relocated to a halfway house. However, concerns arose when Sewell was allowed to travel for extended periods, including recreational activities like hunting, raising questions about the severity of his crimes.

Vienna Luke, despite the challenges she has faced, continues to advocate for systemic change within the justice system to better support survivors of sexual assault. She questions the efficacy of the current system, emphasizing the need for improved outcomes for assault survivors and a reevaluation of how justice is served in such cases. Luke’s bravery in sharing her story has inspired others and serves as a symbol of strength for those who have endured similar ordeals.
