Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski, in partnership with Luisa Stefani from Brazil, secured a spot in the women’s doubles final at the Wuhan Open tennis tournament on Saturday. The pair clinched a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over American Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Spain’s Cristina BucÈ™a.
Dabrowski and Stefani are set to compete against the winner of the semifinal matchup featuring Czech player KateÅ™ina Siniaková and Australia’s Storm Hunter versus Italian duo Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
On the singles side, British athlete Sonay Kartal extended her impressive streak by defeating former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) to advance to the final. Kartal’s triumph over the 2017 Roland Garros winner follows notable wins against Elina Svitolina and two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini.
Reflecting on her victory over Ostapenko, Kartal described it as one of her toughest matches, praising her opponent’s skill while emphasizing the mental strength required for the win. In the final, Kartal will face French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska, who defeated six-time major winner Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 in an all-Polish semifinal.
Swiatek, seeded seventh, tallied 37 winners and 33 unforced errors, whereas 16th-seeded Chwalinska managed 19 winners with just seven unforced errors. Chwalinska, a French Open finalist as a qualifier, aims for her first career title against the 170th-ranked Kartal, who is eyeing her second career title.
Kartal, aged 24 with a career-best ranking of 44 and one singles title, overcame a six-month hiatus earlier this year due to a back injury. Swiatek, a former world No. 1, is striving to improve her standing in the Race to the WTA Finals rankings ahead of the season-ending tournament in Indian Wells, currently holding the 10th spot with the top eight players qualifying.
