Davis Alexander surpassed 5,000 passing yards for the season as the Montreal Alouettes dominated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 44-24 in the CFL’s Thanksgiving Day Classic on Monday. Making history, Alexander joined Anthony Calvillo as the second quarterback in Alouettes’ history to achieve the 5,000-yard milestone.
The 27-year-old quarterback from Gig Harbor, Washington, had an outstanding performance, throwing for five touchdowns, one interception, and 403 passing yards on 26-of-33 completions. Additionally, he rushed for 40 yards on three carries, contributing to Montreal’s undefeated home record in the regular season for the third time at 13-3.
Jerreth Sterns recorded eight receptions for 124 yards, while Charleston Rambo and Tyler Snead each caught two touchdown passes in front of a packed crowd of 23,035 at Molson Stadium. With the victory, Montreal secured first place in the East Division and will host the Eastern final on November 7.
Saskatchewan’s quarterback, Travis Harris, also reached the 5,000-yard mark for the second time in his career but couldn’t prevent the Riders (8-8) from suffering their fourth consecutive loss in a tight playoff race in the West Division. With two weeks left in the regular season, Saskatchewan is tied for third place with Winnipeg and Calgary at 16 points. Despite the tiebreakers favoring the other teams, the Riders still have a playoff chance through the CFL’s crossover rule.
Harris finished with two touchdowns, one interception, and 243 yards on 23-for-33 passing in the rematch of last year’s Grey Cup game. Kian Schaffer-Baker caught two touchdown passes for the Roughriders.
In a game marked by intense back-and-forth action, Montreal surged ahead with two crucial touchdown receptions early in the third quarter. The Alouettes’ strong performance was highlighted by Alexander’s precise passes and key plays by the receiving corps.
Looking ahead, the Alouettes will face the Roughriders once again at Mosaic Stadium in Regina this Saturday in what promises to be another thrilling matchup.
