“Kinngait, Nunavut Gears Up for New Church Construction”

The community of Kinngait, Nunavut, is preparing to construct a new church building to replace the one that was destroyed by a fire over three years ago. South Baffin MLA David Joanasie expressed that this upcoming project will serve as a time for healing for the residents.

The original St. John church, which has been a pillar of the community since the 1950s, was lost in a fire that also consumed the local Living Water church in January 2023. The incidents, occurring within days of each other, were considered suspicious by both the Nunavut Fire Marshal and the RCMP, although no charges were brought following investigations.

Nunavut RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Ashley Daley mentioned that despite extensive inquiries, no suspects were identified in connection to the fires. However, the cases remain open to new information.

While there are lingering questions in the community regarding the fires, Joanasie advised against delving too deeply into speculation. He emphasized redirecting energy towards the future and the rebuilding of the Anglican church.

The local Anglican committee has been actively fundraising for the construction of the new church, with chairperson Eegevadluk Ogutaq reporting that over $1 million has been collected so far, along with essential materials to commence construction in the coming months. Ogutaq also revealed that the new church will be larger than its predecessor.

The timeline for the completion of the new church remains uncertain, but Joanasie expressed optimism about attending the opening ceremony. He highlighted that the fires had a profound impact on the community but believed that the new church’s unveiling would symbolize a moment of renewal and hope.
