WNBA Breaks Attendance Records, Eyes Expansion

The WNBA’s most recent season broke attendance records as industry analysts attribute the league’s surge in popularity to standout athletes, fresh team additions, and a growing enthusiasm for women’s sports overall. In 2026, approximately 3.79 million fans attended WNBA games, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. The heightened demand led to 25 games being moved to larger arenas to accommodate the growing crowds.

An analysis revealed that eight out of the league’s 15 teams consistently filled their arenas to a capacity of 90% or higher during the past season, with the league’s overall average capacity at 83%. This positive trend aligns with the expectations of experts like Cheri Bradish, an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Future of Sport Lab, who sees the WNBA’s growth trajectory following a projected pattern.

According to Ann Pegoraro, the Lang chair in sport management at the University of Guelph, a pivotal moment for the league was the 2020 season, where the WNBA, much like the NBA, played in a COVID-19 pandemic isolation zone known as the “Wubble.” This unique circumstance allowed viewers to witness the high caliber of women’s basketball, coinciding with the surge in popularity of women’s college basketball.

The momentum generated by star players like Caitlin Clark has translated into increased sponsorship revenue, the introduction of new teams, and now, record-breaking attendance figures. Pegoraro emphasized the importance of striking a balance between maintaining interest and providing access to games, hinting at a potential shift towards utilizing larger venues more frequently.

The expansion team Toronto Tempo, which became the first Canadian WNBA team this year, drew a historic crowd of 20,996 at Montreal’s Bell Centre for a regular-season game against the Dallas Wings. This move to larger arenas has proven successful in dispelling misconceptions about the popularity of women’s sports, as observed by Pegoraro.

The Atlanta Dream, aiming to sweep their semifinals series, announced plans to host all 2027 home games at the State Farm Arena, home to the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. The team’s decision underscores the remarkable growth in season ticket memberships over the past five years, reflecting a significant leap in fan engagement and support for women’s basketball.

As the WNBA continues to gain traction, it has become a focal point in discussions surrounding social issues ranging from women’s rights to transgender inclusion in sports. Despite facing controversy and negative attention, the league remains steadfast in its commitment to player advocacy and game development, according to experts Bradish and Pegoraro.

Looking ahead, the WNBA is set to appoint a new commissioner following Cathy Engelbert’s departure, with strategic growth discussions revolving around potential expansion teams, playoff model enhancements, and maximizing fan engagement through more playoff games for fans to enjoy.
