“Failed Execution Leaves Christa Pike Critical”

Christa Pike is currently in an unconscious state and is being assisted with breathing through intubation and a ventilator following a failed attempt to carry out her execution in Tennessee, as stated by her legal representatives on Friday. They have provided detailed information on the injuries Pike sustained due to the unsuccessful lethal injection.

Medical staff are actively working to save Pike’s life and eliminate the lethal substance pentobarbital from her system. Her lawyers have urgently filed a court request for the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve evidence from the failed execution that occurred on Wednesday night.

Pike’s condition remains critical two days after she was given two doses of pentobarbital that failed to result in her passing. Her attorneys mentioned that she has suffered significant arm injuries as a result.

According to Pike’s legal team, the execution team did not realize that the IV lines were improperly placed, causing the pentobarbital to enter Pike’s body partially or entirely due to blown veins. This information sheds light on the severe consequences of the failed execution, which Governor Bill Lee stated followed the state’s established procedures.

This incident marks the second botched execution in Tennessee this year. Governor Lee has suspended further state executions for the remainder of 2026 and has called for an independent investigation into the events surrounding Pike’s failed execution.

Before the execution, Pike’s attorneys had warned the state and courts about issues related to intravenous access that the execution team faced in administering the lethal drug.

Christa Pike, aged 50, was convicted of the 1995 murder of her 19-year-old classmate, Colleen Slemmer, when Pike was 18. She was slated to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two hundred years.
