The prosecutor general of the United Arab Emirates has initiated an inquiry into the stabbing incident that occurred on FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia following a struggle in the cockpit, as per the state news agency report released on Thursday.
The UAE authorities have launched investigations to determine the circumstances, motives, and potential links to terrorist activities or premeditated actions. Due to the aircraft being registered in the UAE and operating under its flag, Emirati law is applicable to crimes committed on board, even if outside the country’s territory.
The incident involved a co-pilot stabbing the captain, raising questions about the attacker’s intentions and background. Israeli officials suggested it was an attempt to crash the plane, which had over 170 passengers on board. Concerns were also raised about how the weapon, likely a knife, was brought onto the aircraft without detection.
Disaster was narrowly avoided when the wounded captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling passengers to subdue the assailant and allowing a reserve crew to land the plane in Saudi Arabia. The attacker, identified as an Omani national, is under investigation in Saudi Arabia with potential transfer to the UAE, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Saudi Arabia has not released any official statements regarding the ongoing investigations. Israeli authorities have labeled the co-pilot as a terrorist, while the UAE and Indian governments have praised the heroic actions of Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, who is recovering well after the incident. Passengers who intervened in subduing the attacker were also commended for their bravery.
The security scare has escalated concerns in Israel, especially with upcoming elections and recent regional tensions. The incident comes amidst heightened security measures and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, the US, and Israel.
