Today marks the sixth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to honoring the 150,000 Indigenous children who were forcibly taken from their communities to attend Indian Residential Schools, where they endured widespread abuse and suffering, with many never returning home. Despite a significant historical record validating these atrocities, there is a concerning plan to destroy tens of thousands of survivor testimonies next year, which were collected as part of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement agreement.
Connie Walker, the host of the award-winning podcast Stolen: Surviving St. Michaels, which delves into her father’s experience at a residential school, is actively engaged in establishing a new archive to safeguard these critical survivor testimonies. She emphasizes the pressing need to preserve these narratives, especially in light of the increasing trend of denying the realities of residential schools.
