The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and several other law enforcement agencies are currently investigating a threat sent to Islamic schools nationwide. The RCMP has confirmed their collaboration with school authorities to probe the reported threats and gather relevant information. The investigation is being conducted in the RCMP’s northwest region, covering the Prairie provinces, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
The threatening note was distributed to multiple schools within the Muslim Association of Canada’s network, primarily in Ontario, with additional schools in Montreal and Vancouver also affected. While the RCMP’s involvement in the northwest region was not immediately clarified, a section of the note referenced the upcoming Alberta referendum, insinuating dire consequences for Muslims once Alberta potentially secedes.
Various police departments, including those in Ottawa, Waterloo Region, Peel Region, London, Ont., and Montreal, have confirmed their involvement in the investigations, as schools in their jurisdictions received the threatening note containing derogatory language towards Muslims. Vancouver police have also ramped up patrols and are actively investigating the matter.
The RCMP emphasized that there is currently no indication of an imminent threat, but urged the public to remain vigilant. Following the publication of the initial story, federal and municipal officials, such as Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, Liberal MP Iqra Khalid, Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish, and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, expressed condemnation of the threats and emphasized the need to combat Islamophobia and hate in all forms.
