“Dinosaur Body Temperatures Revealed Through Chemical Analysis”

Researchers have utilized chemical analysis to determine the body temperature of two Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaurs, shedding light on the long-debated topic of dinosaur thermoregulation.

Aradhna Tripati, a geochemist at the University of California, Los Angeles, explained the methodology used in the study published in Science Advances. The unconventional approach involved examining tooth enamel and eggshells for isotopic clues, as directly measuring the temperature of extinct dinosaurs is impossible.

The technique relied on the relationship between carbon and oxygen isotopes in bioapatite, a mineral found in hard tissues. By studying the “isotope clumping,” scientists could estimate the body temperature of dinosaurs like the T. rex.

Previous research on dinosaur eggs and teeth had suggested that some dinosaurs were warm-blooded. To further explore this, the UCLA team analyzed tooth samples from a T. rex named Thomas, estimating its body temperature to be between 33.8°C and 38.8°C, comparable to large mammals and large birds like ostriches.

This discovery has significant implications for understanding dinosaur behavior and distribution. A warm-blooded T. rex would have had greater adaptability, potentially enabling it to inhabit diverse environments, including colder regions like the Arctic.

This study has prompted discussions among paleontologists about the metabolic characteristics of dinosaurs and how they may have thrived in various climates. The findings contribute valuable insights into the physiology and evolutionary success of these ancient creatures.
