In Regina parks this month, sightings of coyotes have been on the rise, not just limited to the movie theatre. Scott Paton, a regular at Les Sherman Park, had a close encounter with a coyote in mid-August while walking his dogs. The coyote, displaying curious behavior, approached within about 10 feet of them. Paton, unperturbed, continued his walk, alerting others in the park about the presence of the coyote. Reports from a woman at the playground revealed that the coyote had been a frequent visitor in the area.
Despite spotting coyote droppings in the vicinity, Paton remains unfazed, stating that coyotes are a common sight in urban areas and will eventually move on as they adapt to their changing habitats. However, not all residents in the Cathedral neighborhood share his comfort level. Numerous individuals have reported encounters with coyotes around Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park since August via social media platforms.
Concerns have been raised about the boldness of the coyotes, with incidents of them approaching and following people and their pets. City Councilor David Froh had his own encounter with a coyote while jogging in Les Sherman Park. Acknowledging the public safety risks associated with persistent sightings, the City of Regina has been collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely remove and relocate the coyotes reported in the neighborhood.
Froh emphasized the importance of addressing wildlife sightings promptly to mitigate potential risks to the community. Tranquilizing and relocating the animals is the chosen method to ensure the safety of both the public and the wildlife. Despite the apprehension surrounding coyote sightings, Froh reassured residents that such encounters are not uncommon in Regina, urging vigilance for the safety of pets and wildlife.
In the entertainment realm, the movie “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently screening in various theaters across Regina. Froh advised residents to report sightings of real-life coyotes and other wildlife that may pose safety concerns to the authorities.
