“Concerns Raised as Canada Investment Summit Kicks Off”

A group of workers and civil society advocates gathered outside city hall on Monday to express their worries about foreign investment before Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Canada Investment Summit. The summit, happening in Toronto on Monday and Tuesday, is organized by Carney, who aims to attract $1 trillion in investments for 167 projects across the country in the next five years.

While the summit allows the prime minister to promote Canada as a secure investment destination during economic uncertainty, some critics doubt that foreign investments will benefit ordinary Canadians. Rachel Small, from World Beyond War, emphasized the need for more investment in education, transit, and healthcare to address the challenges Canadians face, rather than selling public resources without guarantees.

The assembly, under the theme “The Many vs. The Money,” accused the summit of essentially auctioning off Canadian public assets. Concerns about national sovereignty and environmental impacts were also highlighted during the speeches. Wet’suwet’en Nation Hereditary Chief Na’Moks expressed concerns about selling resources to foreign investors.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford welcomed foreign investment in a statement, mentioning discussions on major projects worth billions in various sectors like mining, energy, and AI. Expert Jeff Mahon from StrategyCorp. stressed the importance of foreign investment for Canada’s economy but acknowledged the need to assess potential challenges.

The summit’s timing is seen as a response to the trade tensions with the U.S., aiming to boost investor confidence and drive economic growth in Canada. The discussions are crucial for securing productive investments that could stimulate future economic activity.
