“Edmonton Mourns Loss of Oilers Savior Cal Nichols, 84”

Cal Nichols, a well-known figure in Edmonton as a business leader and community advocate, passed away at the age of 84. He is recognized for his instrumental role in ensuring the Edmonton Oilers remained in the city. Nichols’ efforts in a 1996 ticket drive significantly increased the team’s season ticket holders and his ability to raise substantial funds from investors prevented the Oilers from being sold and relocated to Houston. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman credited Nichols with saving NHL hockey in Edmonton, emphasizing his consistent efforts to secure the team’s future stability and success.

In 1997, when then-owner Peter Pocklington faced financial challenges and put the team up for sale, Leslie Alexander, owner of the Houston Rockets, made a bid to acquire the Oilers. Driven by his passion for the team and strong business acumen, Nichols mobilized a group of 38 investors predominantly from Alberta to purchase the team for $110 million, with a substantial personal investment. This successful bid by the Edmonton Investors Group (EIG) marked the largest ownership group in the NHL.

The franchise was later sold to current owner Daryl Katz in 2008, with former Oilers player Kevin Lowe acknowledging Nichols’ pivotal role in shaping the team’s foundation. Lowe praised Nichols for his relentless dedication, highlighting his crucial role in keeping the team in Edmonton during a critical moment in March 1998. Despite facing challenges, Nichols and his investor group managed to secure the necessary funds just hours before the deadline, ensuring the Oilers’ continued presence in the city.

Lowe further expressed gratitude for Nichols’ leadership, emphasizing that many significant developments, including the presence of Rogers Place and star player Connor McDavid, would not have been possible without Nichols’ vision and determination. Nichols is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and numerous individuals whose lives were positively impacted by his contributions to the community.
