The Edmonton Oilers have inked a one-year contract with forward Alex Formenton for $850,000 US. Hailing from Barrie, Ontario, the 26-year-old played for HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland for three of the last four seasons, tallying 33 goals and 19 assists in 88 games. Formenton also had a stint with the Ottawa Senators during the 2021–22 NHL season.
Previously entangled in a legal issue, Formenton and four other members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team were cleared of sexual assault charges linked to an incident with a woman named “E.M.” post a Hockey Canada event in London, Ontario. A year ago, the NHL reinstated the players, allowing them to resume play from December 1, 2025.
Following a recent ruling by an independent appeal board that found code of conduct breaches, only Formenton was granted immediate reinstatement to Hockey Canada programs. The other players, Cal Foote, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, and Michael McLeod, remain suspended from Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities.
While Hart signed with Vegas and played in the Stanley Cup final, Dube joined the St. Louis Blues. Formenton, drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the second round of the 2017 NHL draft, has accumulated 23 goals and 16 assists in 109 NHL games.
Formenton’s signing with the Edmonton Oilers represents a new chapter in his hockey career, offering both him and the team fresh opportunities for the upcoming season.
