A new development has emerged in the search for a missing hiker in the Sea-to-Sky region of British Columbia. Stanislav Volo went missing while hiking the Mount Habrich Loop after disembarking the Sea-to-Sky Gondola in Squamish. Search and rescue crews, including volunteers and police dogs, have been actively searching the mountain for the 43-year-old.
During the search, Volo’s sister, Ola Volo, revealed that a new clue was discovered. Volo made a brief 911 call stating he was stuck on the mountain. The call, which lasted only a few seconds, was received on Tuesday evening.
Limited cell service in the Mount Habrich Loop area was cited as the reason for the short phone call. Despite the challenges, Volo’s family remains hopeful and believes he is alive, fighting the harsh weather conditions.
Tyler Duncan from Squamish Search and Rescue mentioned the technical complexities of the search area, noting the infinite number of potential hiding spots due to gullies and boulder fields. The rugged terrain, although not expansive, poses challenges for the search efforts.
Weather conditions have hampered search operations, leading to a pause on Wednesday with plans to resume on Thursday. Volo was last seen on the Shannon Basin Loop, heading towards the designated hiking trail. The search focus is on the climbers trail, a popular but technically demanding area.
Additional details include a missed call from Volo to his wife and surveillance footage showing him exiting the gondola in black clothing. Squamish RCMP have urged anyone with information on Volo’s whereabouts to contact them.
