Rescue teams are tirelessly working to clear mud and debris after a devastating flash flood hit the Himalayan border between Nepal and China. The search for hundreds of missing individuals continues as the death toll rises, with Nepal reporting 469 fatalities and China confirming three deaths in Tibet. The combined missing count from both countries exceeds 1,500.
Authorities in Nepal and China are on high alert due to a lake formed upstream following the calamity, which is at risk of overflowing and triggering more flooding. The newly formed lake currently holds around 2 million cubic meters of water, with an additional 3 million cubic meters expected in the next three days, according to China’s Ministry of Water Resources.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the lake’s barrier is more than 10 kilometers away from Gyirong Port, the border crossing with Nepal that was severely affected by the flood. The lake sits at an elevation of 2,950 meters, approximately 1,000 meters above Gyirong Port.
In response to the crisis, the Nepal Army has dispatched a team to inspect the Bhotekoshi River near the border area for potential flood risks. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the disaster zone, with 3,253 individuals airlifted to safety by helicopters.
Among the missing are 30 Canadians, including ten Toronto residents who were trekking in the region. The affected area is popular among hikers and pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Additionally, a team has been deployed to the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project near the Nepal-China border to rescue people reportedly trapped inside a tunnel.
Survivors recount harrowing experiences, with eyewitnesses describing the flood as a “tsunami” that swept away buildings, bridges, and vehicles. Families worldwide anxiously await news of their missing loved ones, with reports of tragic losses and ongoing search efforts dominating the headlines.
President Donald Trump expressed concern over the catastrophic flooding, offering U.S. assistance to Nepalese leaders. Scientists attribute the disaster to a collapse of bedrock beneath a glacier in the Himalayan region, causing a surge of water that devastated the valleys below.
