While Whelan doesn’t specifically remember the encounter, she vividly remembers meeting Parton at a concert in Disneyland the year before “Jolene” was recorded. At the show’s end, Whelan approached Parton for an autograph, drawn to her song “Coat of Many Colors.”
Years later, after watching a TV movie about Parton’s life in 2015, Whelan researched the origins of the song “Jolene” and stumbled upon Parton’s description of the girl named Jolene. Struck by the similarities between herself and the described girl, Whelan began piecing together the possibility that she was the inspiration.
Whelan’s red hair, green eyes, and fair skin, coupled with the frequent mix-up of her name with Jolene, further bolster her belief. Despite initial annoyance from being associated with the song’s namesake, Whelan has now come to appreciate the iconic track.
The song “Jolene” narrates a mature storyline of a woman pleading with another not to steal her partner, derived from Parton’s personal experiences. Although Whelan had to endure teasing over the song, she has grown fond of it over the years.
