Trump Denies Interfering with French-Canadians

Just before Quebec’s upcoming provincial election, President Donald Trump dismissed the notion of him interfering with French-speaking Canadians as absurd in a recent post on his Truth Social account. This statement comes in light of the breakdown in trade talks between the U.S. and Canada, with Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighting concerns that certain U.S. demands could jeopardize the French language through cuts to subsidies for French media and bilingual labeling requirements. Carney, speaking in Lévis, Quebec, clarified that American negotiators viewed the discoverability of French-Canadian content on streaming platforms as a contentious issue. Trump refuted these claims in his social media post, denying any intention to meddle with French-speaking Canadians and accusing the Prime Minister of fabricating the story for political gain. The President expressed his admiration for French Canadians in his post. Additionally, Quebec passed Bill 109 last year, officially known as “An Act to affirm the cultural sovereignty of Québec and to enact the Act respecting the discoverability of French-language cultural content in the digital environment,” which mandates streaming services to feature French-language content more prominently. This legislation was enacted in December 2025.
