“Vice-President JD Vance Critiques Canada’s Trade Talks”

During a fundraiser event in Southampton, New York, U.S. Vice-President JD Vance commented on the recent trade agreement with Canada. Vance mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to display toughness in negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump. He acknowledged Conservative MP Jamil Jivani as a valuable supporter for Canada.

At the private function, Vance described Carney as a “very amiable person” with whom he has a good relationship. However, Vance humorously remarked that Carney boasted of outshining Trump, despite Canada compromising on various issues.

Vance praised Jivani for being a significant advocate behind the scenes, highlighting the MP’s positive influence on the negotiations.

Vance Critiques Poilievre’s Role in Trade Talks

Vance also mentioned Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Canadian Conservatives, as having minimal impact in the negotiations. He referred to Poilievre as a negligible figure in the discussions.

Regarding the trade deal’s trustworthiness, Vance emphasized that the White House and the vice-president’s office had not provided any comments to the media.

After recent bilateral talks, President Trump announced a three-day delay on imposing new tariffs on Canadian goods, following a conversation with Prime Minister Carney. Trump lauded the agreement as beneficial for all parties involved.

Reports suggest that the deal will involve the U.S. reducing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, while Canada will reintroduce American alcohol in its liquor stores.

Further negotiations are underway with a looming deadline, as Canada-U.S. Minister Dominic LeBlanc meets with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to finalize the agreement.

U.S. Aims to Influence Canadian Policies

Vance emphasized Trump’s stance on not catering to Canada’s demands but leveraging opportunities for the country’s benefit. He indicated a strategic effort to influence Canadian policies in alignment with U.S. interests.

He pointed out the pivotal role of U.S. negotiators, including Greer and Lutnick, while acknowledging his enhanced involvement in the discussions due to his connection with Jivani.

Jivani’s Impact on Negotiations

Vance shared insights on Jivani’s discreet involvement in the negotiations, noting the MP’s contributions towards favorable outcomes in areas like energy and automotive trade.
