In the aftermath of last summer’s devastating wildfires, the Town of Small Point-Broad Cove-Blackhead-Adam’s Cove is set to receive a green makeover, thanks to a generous donation of over 450 trees from a couple residing in the Codroy Valley. Harrison Bragg and Judy Warren, who are winding down their nursery business, embarked on a journey to Conception Bay North to distribute the trees to the community.
Moved by the plight of those who lost everything in the fires, Warren expressed, “We understood how these people must feel to lose everything, and we just felt like we wanted to help, and we didn’t know any other way to do it.” However, their journey hit a roadblock when a vehicle accident on the Trans-Canada highway caused a seven-hour delay, forcing them to spend the night in their truck upon arrival on the north shore.
Despite the setback, the couple’s dedication remained unwavering. With the help of a Facebook post by the town, community members gathered to collect the trees. Bragg described the experience as “heartwarming,” witnessing the joy in the community as the trees were distributed and residents sought advice on planting.
Warren shared touching encounters with residents, including a woman who lost her entire garden to the wildfires, and expressed gratitude for the warm reception they received. She also learned of plans to involve students in replanting cedars near the school, calling the entire endeavor “an experience of a lifetime.”
The estimated value of the donated trees was nearly $9,000, a gesture greatly appreciated by Mayor Curtis Delaney, who emphasized the significance of the donation beyond its monetary value. Looking ahead, Bragg plans to send thousands of seeds to the community next summer to further contribute to the reforestation efforts.
Bragg humbly stated, “We didn’t want no recognition for this here. We just wanted to get the trees down to you people. We’ll turn it green again.” The act of kindness from Bragg and Warren has not only provided hope and rejuvenation but has also strengthened the sense of community spirit in Small Point-Broad Cove-Blackhead-Adam’s Cove.
