Four individuals, including two teenagers and an infant, were saved from a rapid house fire by an off-duty RCMP officer who acted swiftly to assist a distressed man in rescuing his family through a basement window. Constable Anton Lorde, while returning home from duty on July 18, noticed a thick plume of smoke rising in the air, leading him to Mount Pleasant Street in Sydney, Nova Scotia’s Whitney Pier neighborhood.
Upon arrival, Lorde encountered a house engulfed in flames, with fire blazing from various areas. Believing the house to be empty due to the presence of several people outside, Lorde began clearing the street for approaching fire trucks. However, after learning from a neighbor that multiple individuals, including children, resided in the house, he swiftly sprang into action.
Guided by the neighbor, Lorde headed to the backyard, where he leaped over a fence and started knocking on windows of the burning structure, systematically checking each one for any occupants. A startled boy peered through the blinds, leading Lorde to urge him to evacuate. The situation escalated when the father of the children emerged as well.
Peter Magliaro, the homeowner, recounted his harrowing experience racing home upon receiving a call about the fire, braving intense heat and flames to rescue his loved ones. With Lorde’s assistance, Magliaro managed to retrieve his family members from the building, including his infant stepdaughter, whom he handed over to Lorde without realizing he was a police officer.
Collaborating with his brother-in-law, Magliaro successfully evacuated his other children from the burning house. Both Lorde and Magliaro acknowledged the collective effort in saving lives, emphasizing the crucial role played by each individual in the rescue operation.
The fire department promptly responded to the incident, rescuing the family’s pets amidst the chaos. Investigations into the fire’s cause are underway, with Magliaro suspecting foul play and offering a reward for information leading to the responsible party’s apprehension.
Despite being hailed as a hero by bystanders, Lorde humbly attributed his actions to being in the right place at the right time. The community rallied around Magliaro and his family, offering support as they navigate the aftermath of the devastating fire.
