“Legions Evolve: Attracting Younger Demographic and Expanding Offerings”

The Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood offers a blend of traditional and modern activities. Veterans can be seen enjoying drinks in the pub downstairs, while upstairs, individuals like Hannah, a 37-year-old yoga enthusiast, find solace in yoga classes among military artifacts.

Legions nationwide are adapting to attract a younger demographic, offering diverse events, affordable dining, and a welcoming atmosphere. To celebrate the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary, first-time memberships are free, encouraging new faces to join regardless of military background.

While remaining pillars of veteran support and community events, Legions are evolving to embrace change and growth. The national spokesperson highlighted the influx of over 100,000 new members in 2026, pushing total membership beyond 300,000.

Despite successes, some Legions have faced closures due to financial challenges. However, branches like the Bala Legion in Ontario have thrived by evolving their offerings, including affordable dinners and concerts open to all. The Bala Legion plans to expand further by offering affordable housing units on their property to ensure sustainability.

President Dennis Mills emphasized the importance of new memberships to maintain the community service legacy. He urged Canadians to join and support the vibrant future of their local Legions.
