A tragic incident unfolded in Melbourne, Australia, where a man lost his life after allegedly being attacked by a group of youngsters, some as young as 12. The victim, Van Viet Truong, a 60-year-old grocery shop owner, intervened to assist a colleague during a robbery when he was assaulted by the juvenile gang. The confrontation escalated on Hampshire Road, leading to Truong sustaining severe head injuries.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Truong succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. Authorities have charged three boys aged 12, 13, and 15 from the Brimbank area, along with two 14-year-old girls from different localities, with offenses including affray and causing serious injury. While one of the accused has been cleared of charges, the police are contemplating elevating the charges against the remaining individuals in light of Truong’s tragic demise.
Magistrate Robyn Hamilton expressed concerns over the victim’s fate, foreseeing the dire outcome due to the vicious assault. She criticized the children’s actions, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. The court proceedings saw emotional pleas from a mother seeking bail for her 12-year-old son, citing mental health concerns, which were ultimately rejected.
The incident has sparked outrage, with radio host Jacqui Felgate condemning the normalization of such crimes among children in the city. Authorities, including Victorian state Premier Ben Carroll, have denounced the attack, labeling it as entirely unacceptable and calling for stringent measures to address violent offenses committed by juveniles.
