Gestational diabetes presents risks to both mothers and their children, potentially leading to long-term health issues. It can result in complications such as premature births, emergency Caesarean sections, and babies being born either larger or smaller than expected. Experts emphasize the importance of early detection and proper management of gestational diabetes to mitigate these risks.
The National Health Service (NHS) notes that gestational diabetes may have few symptoms and can occur at any stage of pregnancy, although it is more common in the second or third trimester. The condition arises when women cannot produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels adequately during pregnancy, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels.
Furthermore, recent research by the University of Edinburgh highlighted a disproportionate increase in gestational diabetes cases among women of color, with a 23% rise among Asian women, and those living in deprivation, showing a 14% increase. These groups also faced higher risks of complications during pregnancy, such as pre-term births, emergency Caesarean sections, and having smaller babies.
The study, analyzing five years of hospital data in England involving over two million women giving birth to 2.8 million babies, indicated a concerning trend of rising gestational diabetes diagnoses.
