A mother, Ffion Smith, expressed her distress after doctors initially diagnosed her eight-year-old son, Ruben Troy’s back pain as a minor issue treatable with Gaviscon, only to later discover it was cancer. Smith noticed Ruben complaining of sharp pains in April 2026, attributing it to his active play. However, when Ruben collapsed and experienced severe pain a week later, Smith sought medical help.
Despite multiple visits to healthcare professionals, including an urgent care center, doctors dismissed Ruben’s symptoms as a stomach-related ailment caused by poor dietary habits. They recommended Gaviscon and advised against coffee consumption, despite Ruben not drinking coffee. As Ruben’s condition worsened with symptoms like paleness, bruising, weight loss, and difficulty walking, Smith persisted, leading to blood tests that revealed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in late June.
Following chemotherapy and lumbar puncture surgery, Ruben is now recovering at home. Smith criticized the medical negligence that delayed Ruben’s cancer diagnosis and urged parents to advocate for their children’s health. She emphasized the importance of speaking up if they suspect something is amiss.
Smith has created a GoFundMe page to help cover Ruben’s essential medical expenses during his recovery. She shared her story to raise awareness and encourage other parents to trust their instincts and demand proper medical attention for their children. A spokesperson for NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board expressed condolences to Ruben’s family and emphasized their commitment to maintaining high healthcare standards in the region.
