A fresh wildfire is currently spreading in the countryside near Colchester, and numerous firefighters are engaged in combating the flames.
This incident follows a significant wildfire at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk that caused severe damage to wildlife habitats, with an estimated recovery time of up to 25 years.
The fire at Dunwich Heath affected an area equivalent to around 140 football pitches near the Sizewell B nuclear power plant, including parts of the RSPB’s Minsmere nature reserve, known for its rare bird and reptile species.
Adam Rowlands, Suffolk area manager for the RSPB, mentioned that the habitat impacted by the fire may require several years, up to a couple of decades, to return to its pre-fire state.
Despite the challenges posed by the wildfires, the operations at the Sizewell B power station remain unaffected, as confirmed by an EDF spokesperson.
The wildfire situation in Dunwich Hill is described as “changeable” by the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, but progress is being made in containing the blaze both on the ground and from the air.
A major incident response is ongoing, with approximately 12 to 15 fire engines deployed at the scene, and efforts are expected to continue through the coming days and possibly into the next week.
There are currently no plans for further evacuations, and the safety of the Sizewell B nuclear power plant is assured, with no cause for immediate concern.
The authorities have mentioned that the fire is being driven south by winds away from the Sizewell nuclear plant, towards the coast, with RSPB Minsmere acting as a natural barrier between the fire and the plant.
Emergency crews are utilizing various tools and vehicles, including water backpacks and off-road 4×4 vehicles, to access and combat the fire in challenging terrains.
The Suffolk fire service deputy chief fire officer highlighted the efforts being made to control the fire and protect both people and property, emphasizing the collaborative support received from multiple fire and rescue services.
