A man known for his continuous growth has passed away at the age of 33 due to complications related to a rare medical condition. Sulemana Abdul Samed, who stood at 7ft 4in tall and was suspected to have grown even taller before his demise, succumbed on Monday following infections in his leg sores. Familiar to many in Ghana as Awuche, he gained local fame for his remarkable height, putting his hometown of Gambaga on the map.
A relative, Sulemana Abdul Kudus, expressed how well-loved and charitable Samed was, noting the ongoing inquiries about the circumstances surrounding his death. Samed’s life took a drastic turn in his early twenties when he experienced sudden and rapid growth. Initially working in a butcher’s shop in Accra, he aspired to attend driving school until an unexpected swelling of the tongue disrupted his plans.
Subsequently diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting connective tissue, Samed faced challenges as his stature increased, leading to physical limitations and the abandonment of his ambitions. His journey was marked by the regret of not being able to pursue driving due to his height restrictions and the inability to engage in sports, a pastime he once enjoyed.
Despite his medical condition, Samed’s popularity soared, attracting attention even from influential figures like the brother of Ghana’s president, John Mahama, who offered support for his medical expenses. Speculation arose about Samed potentially claiming the title of the world’s tallest man, with initial measurements at a hospital suggesting a height of 9ft 6in, later corrected by journalists to 7ft 4in due to measurement limitations.
Currently, the title of the world’s tallest living man belongs to Sultan Kosen from Turkey, standing at 8ft 3in. The tallest person in recorded history was American Robert Wadlow, who reached 8ft 11in before his passing at 22 years old in 1940. Samed’s untimely death in a hospital in Tamale resulted from infected leg sores, a complication unrelated to his underlying medical condition, leaving a void in the community and marking the end of an extraordinary journey.
