He stressed that if more hot weather periods occur this summer, it could result in the highest number of heat-related deaths ever recorded.
Examining the unprecedented heatwaves in May and June, health authorities noted that the May heatwave was associated with 753 deaths between the 24th and 27th, while the June heatwave saw 2,124 excess deaths between the 21st and 28th. The June heatwave, which triggered three consecutive red warnings from UKHSA and the Met Office, posed significant risks to individuals, particularly the elderly and those with pre-existing health issues.
