A British surfer, Arran Strong, has disappeared off the coast of Portugal during a paddleboarding challenge near Arrifana. The alarm was raised on Monday morning, prompting a search operation involving lifeboat crews, firefighters, and emergency services. The search resumed on Wednesday morning.
Despite battling the rare Alpha-1 Antitrypsin disease, Arran was known for conquering large waves in Europe. He represented Great Britain at the ISA World Surfing Games in 2024 and 2025.
Photographer José Maria Pyrrait, who was participating in a 560-mile paddleboarding marathon with Arran, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram. Mr. Pyrrait recounted the moment he noticed Arran’s drifting board and initiated a search effort with the help of his partner.
