A family from the UK found themselves camping in a backyard due to the wildfires in France, which led to their evacuation, leaving them stranded and resorting to sleeping on the beach for a period of time.
Melissa Sood and her family were visiting her grandmother when they were forced to evacuate as wildfires swept through the coastal town of Biscarrosse, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Bordeaux. The 33-year-old mother, along with her husband Sunny, a 42-year-old police officer, their 14-year-old daughter, and her brother and sister, were all part of the evacuation.
Initially stranded on the beach, the family had to sleep on cardboard until a family friend offered them refuge in their garden in Sanguinet, about seven miles away. Since then, they have been staying in a supermarket tent in the friend’s garden, uncertain of when they can return home to Basingstoke due to blocked roads and inaccessible house keys.
Over 200,000 individuals in France were evacuated as wildfires engulfed an area four times the size of Paris. President Emmanuel Macron described the situation as “completely unprecedented” and the most severe since World War Two.
Melissa described the terrifying scene of the fire, with explosions from gas canisters adding to the chaos. With no available hotels, the family has been enduring sleepless nights in a tent, relying on the kindness of strangers.
Their journey to France to visit Melissa’s 83-year-old grandmother took a drastic turn when they encountered the wildfire. The sudden evacuation and subsequent challenges of finding shelter and basic necessities have left the family in a state of uncertainty and distress.
Despite their planned return on July 30, the family faces obstacles in accessing essential belongings and navigating blocked routes to the airport. Their situation is compounded by the lack of assistance from insurance companies, embassies, or local authorities, leaving them feeling abandoned in their time of need.
As they await further developments, the family remains hopeful for a resolution to their predicament amidst the ongoing crisis in the region.
